Downtown Denver

Monday the 13th

I have always considered myself a pretty lucky guy but that can come at a price, especially when Karma feels bitchy. I purposely flew early to Denver so that I would have time to take in the local sights. Here is how my day went:

• Woke up at 4 AM to catch the first flight to Toronto...no problem there.
• Landed in the middle of a thunderstorm, the worse I've seen since that time in Dallas.
• Spent 30 min on the tarmac since lightning has caused a freeze in ground operations.
• As I rush to make my connection, I get through customs but notice that they are just piling the checked luggage next to the non moving X-ray machine...this does not bode well.
• My worries are confirmed once I get to Denver one hour late, none of the Toronto passengers got their luggage.
• I take a cab downtown only to discover that there are two Hyatts in Denver and the cabbie took me to the wrong one.
• Once I walk three blocks to the right hotel, I am told that they have lost my reservation. Got an upgrade, with a great view from the 36th floor, but I'm losing the conference rebate and it's gonna cost me $50 extra.
• Since my suitcase is on its way to Buthan, including my tripod, I had to go shopping instead. Anyway, the way my luck has been going, walking around a metropolitan area with an expensive camera might not be the best of idea.
• Tried to call the family...no payphones in the hotel. Chatting will have to do.
• Finally, after taking today's image, I notice that the first 3 feet of carpet next to the window are completely soaked. Did I mention that I was wearing socks. As I am writing this, I got two engineer going through my room on all fours trying to find the source of the leak. The hotel is only three months old and there are still a few bugs remaining.

After talking with some of my colleagues at the reception I realized that I might be in luck after all. The hotel is so new that they didn't get the entire complement of beds...some of them have to sleep on couches and "army cots".
