Chachagua Cloud Forest

We spent one week in a cottage near the Chachagua cloud forest which lies 20 km south of the Arenal Volcano.

Doing good photography in the jungle is actually quite difficult. You have to pick a subject out of the chaos that surrounds you, in this case a large tree fern. The slightly reduced vegetation over small streams helps to provide depth. Jungles are also very dark, a problem that is compounded by the fact that you need an overcast sky to produce uniform light and a polarizer to reduce glare from the wet vegetation. A good tripod is a must. Although the temperature during this morning hike was in the low 90's, the humidity, especially up in the hills, was absolutely insane. Fogging is a constant battle and, upon my return, I was so covered with sweat that it looked as if I had fallen into the river.

A very pleasant surprise from all of our hikes was that there were few stinging and biting bugs.
