Guest Photoblogger: Francois - Happy birthday little turtles

A year ago today, I witnessed one of the most fascinating event in my life.

We were vacationning in Baja Media Luna, in the mexican Riviera Maya. The beach in front of our appartment is a turtle nesting ground. One of the turtle nest was due that day and, by the end of the afternoon, we finally saw the first small head poke through the sand. A lot of patience is required since it can take close to two hours for all the eggs to hatch and for all the babies to get ready.

When it finally happened, it was like a volcano spurting an enormous amount of cute little baby turtles (84 in fact). They all started to run to the ocean and within ten minutes, it was all over.

Daytime hatching are pretty uncommon. For once, human presence was a good thing since we kept the gulls and vultures from plucking them all for dinner.

It is said only a few will make it through their first year. I wonder how many are left today?
