White Heads

When Google doesn't even know your name

Last May, traffic at Digital Apoptosis was at its peak with more than 48,000 monthly uniques. Unfortunately not all of them were welcome as image leeching was reaching epidemic proportions and, in desperation, I installed an .htaccess file to prevent unauthorized uploads of my jpeg files. After some reconfiguration to permit loading by the most popular rss readers, traffic stabilized to about 30,000 monthly uniques and I left things as they were.

Things went downhill in October and crashed to 13,000 uniques this month. What I did not realize was that my .htaccess file was blocking Google Image and the other image searching tools. Since they only update their database twice a year, the problem went unnoticed until it was too late.

Doh!
