Decade

Was it really the Decade from Hell?

A couple of weeks ago, Time Magazine made a compelling argument to call 2000-2009 the Decade from Hell. While I'm sure that those who lived through the 1910's and the 1940's may disagree, the facts remain that the world will not remember these past 10 years very fondly.

As I look at where we were a decade ago, I have to say that the Millenials were pretty good to us. Actually they were very good.

• We were able to guide our daughters through their teenage years (Stephanie still has a few months to go). They didn't drop out of school, nor did they become addicted, insane or pregnant.
• Both Christiane and I were gainfully employed for this entire period. I lived through the genomics revolution and was able to make a significant impact in one of my field of research.
• Any decade where you pay off your mortgage has to be considered a financial success.
• With one exception, there were no unexpected death or crippling diseases & injuries in our immediate families. My father-in-law has been fighting colon cancer for the past 5 years but we are now in 2010 and he is still with us.
• Christiane and I started going to the gym on Sept 10th 2001 (I wonder why I remember that date?). There has been a few interruptions then and now but we are still pushing each other to stay in shape.
• This was the decade where I really started to see the world having travelled to 8 Canadian provinces, 14 US states, Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Sweden, Croatia, France, England, The Netherlands, Germany, Italy and India.
• This was also the decade where I rediscovered photography which led to a significant internet footprint, a bit of money and a huge amount of personal satisfaction.

Here's hoping that, 10 years from now, we won't remember who Sarah Palin was.
