The flag at Ground Zero
In May 2002, a viewing platform had been erected next to the remains of the World Trade Center. The line to go in would stretch for about a block and passed next to this enormous flag that was completely covered with messages and signatures. I hope they kept it for the museum, it was extremely touching.
One of the many things that saddens me about these events is that they spawned so much goodwill around the world and that most of it was utterly wasted.
