The face of a killer
Every time I tell a friend or family member that I work on cancer, I inevitably get asked how long it will be until we finally find a cure. My usual answer is that we have a long way to go since each individual tumor is essentially unique. This point was reinforced this morning when we learned that a friend and colleague has passed away from skin cancer, leaving behind his wife and three school-age children. The author of dozens of scientific publications, Denis has spent 20 years at the NRC, surrounded by biomedical researchers. He only heard of his diagnosis a few months ago and, other than our moral support, there was nothing we could offer that would have prevented his fate. As we dig ever deeper into the secrets of life, I am always humbled by how little we actually understand.
