Plasma

At first glance, you would think that we have forsaken biology in favor of nuclear physics but the plasma seen in this image originates from a blood sample and not a Tokamak fusion reactor.

Christiane was testing different methods to use a Microarray Printer to spot minuscule quantities of plasma on modified glass slides. She then used a fluorescent antibody to detect the presence of a specific blood protein. But, instead of using a microarray scanner, she decided to put the slide in a fluorescence microscope. This was taken at 400X magnification, the spot itself being only one tenth of a milimeter in diameter. The various forms adopted by the plasma as it dried were absolutely gorgeous.

In technical terms, this spot might look wicked cool but its morphology is all wrong. The good ones are supposed to be perfectly circular.
